HVAC Techs are Skilled Workers

Becoming a HVAC technician means more than just being able to use a screwdriver or switching out refrigerants. They understand the mechanics of heating, cooling, and ventilation, including the math, chemistry and physics that make these systems work. However, HVAC techs must also possess a variety of non-technical skills such as computer savvy, detail orientation, time management, and troubleshooting. 4 Furthermore, HVAC techs also acquire interpersonal communication skills like working in a team, considering a supervisor’s instructions, taking on leadership roles, and adjusting to customers’ wishes and demands.

Women are in the Field

The growth of women HVAC techs has been making great strides in the industry. A woman-owned HVAC business was awarded the 2015 Women of Influence Award. Major efforts to recruit women for the trades have resulted in programs like the Dwyer Groups’ Women in Trades, which awards scholarships to women aspiring to a career in the trades across the country. The efforts to expose women to trade skills and careers is bringing about a huge shift from an industry where women still only make up a few percent of the workforce. 5
